DAY 17: THE LITURGICAL CALENDAR (Part 2 of 3)*

The liturgical calendar is created by the Secretariat of Divine Worship of the USCCB (United States Catholic Conference of Bishops) each year. While most Catholics are used to seeing the round colorfully illustrated calendar, there is an actual 52-page document for 2020! It instructs the faithful on each day's celebration, rank, liturgical color, and Lectionary citations. Through the liturgical calendar, the Church assigns the appropriate readings for each day of the year based on the season (Advent, Christmas, Lent, Triduum, Easter, and Ordinary Time).

Today reads like this: 13 Fri Lenten Weekday violet Gn 37:3-4, 12-13a, 17b-28a/Mt 21:33-43, 45-46

The liturgical year celebrates and recalls the sacred mysteries of the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The "new year" is not a calendar year but begins with the First Sunday of Advent. The purpose of the liturgical calendar is to conform our lives around the life of Christ. "The Church, 'in the course of the year … unfolds the whole mystery of Christ'" (CCC 1194). In Her wisdom, the Church encourages us, through the daily scriptures, to meditate on the mysteries of salvation history. Thereby shaping our days, our stories, by the sacred life of Christ. Something I think we could all use these days. #livinglent2

*Since so much of our faith intertwines, tomorrow, we will continue with the Missal.
